Do student checking accounts qualify for bank bonuses?

A student account qualifies only if the bonus offer names that account and you meet its age rules. Capital One's 360 Checking disclosures require age 18. Wells Fargo requires 18 to apply for Everyday Checking online, and a primary owner age 17 to 24 can avoid the monthly fee. That waiver is not the $325 bonus. A differently named campus account does not inherit another product's offer.
Student banking pages talk about fees and age. Bonus pages talk about new customers and deposits. Using one page to answer the other question is how the bonus gets missed.
Age, from the pages we read
Capital One's 360 Checking disclosures say the account is available to people who are at least 18, among other identity and address rules, including military APO or FPO addresses. 3 Wells Fargo's Everyday Checking page says you must be 18 or older to apply online, and that customers 17 and under must open at a branch. 1 Those are opening rules. They are not bonus amounts. If you are under the age the online flow requires, the public online bonus path may be unavailable even when a branch will open some account.
A student fee waiver is not a bonus
Wells Fargo lists a primary owner age 17 to 24 as one way to avoid the Everyday Checking monthly service fee, alongside a qualifying electronic deposit, a minimum daily balance, and a qualifying military direct deposit in its Worldwide Military Banking program. 1 The $325 bonus is on a different page, and it requires the offer code plus $1,000 in qualifying electronic deposits within 90 calendar days of opening. 2 Meeting the age waiver can zero the monthly fee. It does not deposit $325. 1 2 Wells Fargo checking bonus requirements keeps those pages apart. The military direct-deposit line on the fee page is also a fee waiver, not a separate bonus amount we are publishing. 1
The product name has to match
A bonus written for Everyday Checking or 360 Checking is not a bonus written for every account a campus banker might open. How to read a bank bonus offer starts with the product. If the account title on your statement does not match the offer, stop and ask which offer you are enrolled in. Second-chance checking and bank bonuses makes the same point for a different product mismatch.
Campus pay still has to qualify
What counts as a direct deposit applies to a campus job the same way it applies to any employer. ACH from the employer into the bonus account can qualify. A balance that stays on a campus card, or a Venmo transfer, is a different credit. Does Venmo count is that case. Put the offer's product name and your age-eligibility note in the bank bonus tracker before you submit a payroll form you cannot undo quickly. Whether the bonus is worth the payroll change at all is the arithmetic in is a bank bonus worth it.
Common questions
I am 17. Can I open the Wells Fargo bonus online?
The Everyday Checking page says you must be 18 or older to apply online, and that customers 17 and under open at a branch. The bonus offer also has its own new-customer and deposit rules. Ask the branch which offer, if any, can be attached to the account they can open for you.
Does the age 17 to 24 fee waiver replace the $1,000 deposits?
No. On the account page it is one way to avoid the monthly service fee. The bonus offer still describes $1,000 in qualifying electronic deposits. A waived fee makes the account cheaper. It does not mark the bonus complete.
Does a work-study paycheck count?
If the school or employer sends it as a qualifying direct deposit into the bonus account, it can. If it is loaded to a campus card or a person-to-person app, it likely does not. Read the label at the bank, and read the offer's definition.
