Can a second-chance checking account earn a bank bonus?

Usually you have to read two products, not one. The CFPB describes lower-risk checking and prepaid cards that block overdrafts for people who were denied a standard account. A bank bonus is an offer on a named product, often a standard checking account with its own approval rules. Chase Total Checking's $400 offer and Chase Secure Banking's separate transaction offer are not interchangeable. Approval for the second product is not enrollment in the first.
Second-chance checking is a path back to an account. A bank bonus is a promotion on whatever account the offer names. Those goals meet only when the offer's product is the account you were approved for.
What the CFPB is describing
The CFPB says you may be denied a checking account because a checking-account reporting company has negative information: an unpaid negative balance from an overdraft after the bank closed the account, suspected fraud, or a history of bad checks. 1 A joint account with someone who had those problems can put the information on your report too. 1 Banks and credit unions supply that information to companies such as Chex Systems and Early Warning Services. 1 The companies generally cannot include most negative information more than seven years old, and some disregard it after five. 1 Does opening bank accounts hurt your credit separates that report from a credit score.
The product the bank may offer instead
The CFPB says many banks and credit unions offer checking accounts and prepaid cards designed to prevent overdraft and overdraft fees, and that you may qualify for one of those even after a denial for another product. 1 That is useful. It is not a statement that the replacement product carries the bonus advertised on a different page. Ask, in writing, which account you were approved for, and which offer code was attached.
Chase shows the split in public
Chase Total Checking's offer is a $400 bonus for $1,000 in qualifying direct deposits within 90 days of enrollment, and it says Zelle is not a direct deposit. 2 Chase Secure Banking's public offer is a different bonus built on qualifying transactions, and the page includes Zelle among transactions that can count. 3 If you were steered to Secure Banking, track Secure Banking's rules. Do not mark the Total Checking row complete in the bank bonus tracker. The Total Checking lines are in Chase Total Checking bonus requirements.
Fees still matter on the account you got
A lower-risk account can charge a monthly fee. The CFPB's overdraft guidance is the reason these products exist: unpaid overdrafts become the negative file that blocks the next account. 1 If the bonus product is unavailable, price the account you can open on its fee, not on a bonus you were not allowed to take. When a bank bonus is not worth taking includes "you will not be approved" as a reason to stop.
Before the next application
Order the free report named in the adverse action notice, and dispute errors in writing. 1 Pay an old unpaid balance if the bank requires it before a new account. 1 Then read the offer that matches the product in front of you. Soft pull or hard pull is the credit-inquiry question, which is separate from ChexSystems. How many of these accounts you can open in a year is still capped by each bank's own rule, which how many bank bonuses in a year explains. Closing one of them later is a different page: can you close a bank account after the bonus.
Common questions
If I was denied, should I apply for the bonus account again the same day?
Get the adverse action notice first. It names the reporting company. Order that report, dispute errors, and ask the bank whether a lower-risk account is available. A second application into the same product repeats the same decision.
Does Chase Secure Banking pay the Total Checking bonus?
No. They are different offers. Total Checking requires qualifying direct deposits for a $400 bonus. Secure Banking's public offer pays on a count of qualifying transactions, and it lists different transactions. Opening one does not complete the other.
Will a second-chance account hurt my credit score?
A deposit account is not a loan. The CFPB's denial guidance is about checking-account reports, not about a credit-score penalty for opening an account. A hard inquiry happens when you apply for credit. Ask the bank before you add a credit product such as overdraft line of credit.
