Does Venmo count as a direct deposit for a bank bonus?

A Venmo payment you send or receive as person-to-person is not a qualifying direct deposit at Chase or Wells Fargo. Chase excludes person-to-person payments and names Zelle. Wells Fargo excludes Zelle by name. Payroll that your employer sends by ACH into the bank account can still qualify, even if you looked at the pay stub in an app. Money that stays inside Venmo never hits the bank's test.

Venmo shows up in bonus arguments because it moves money. The offer pages we read do not define Venmo. They define who sent the credit, and how it posted.

Person-to-person is the excluded shape

Chase says a direct deposit is an electronic deposit of your paycheck, pension, or government benefits from your employer or the government, and that person-to-person payments such as Zelle are not a direct deposit. 1 Wells Fargo says transfers from one account to another, mobile deposits, Zelle, and branch or ATM deposits are not qualifying electronic deposits. 2 Venmo's pay-a-person flow is that shape. The missing word "Venmo" is not a loophole. What counts as a direct deposit already lists Zelle. This page adds the app people substitute for it.

Payroll into the bank is a different credit

If your employer sends an ACH credit to the checking account in the offer, the sender is the employer. That is the deposit Chase names, and it is the ACH direct deposit Wells Fargo names. 1 2 The fact that a pay stub also appears inside Venmo, or inside any other app, does not recode an employer ACH. Look at the bank's activity line. Employer name and a payroll description is the pattern to trust. A line that names Venmo and a person is the pattern to reject.

Money that never leaves Venmo

Venmo can be the destination of payroll. That balance is at Venmo, not at the bank running the bonus. A bonus test written as deposits "into the new checking account" cannot see it. 1 Cash out to the bank only counts if the cash-out itself matches the bank's definition. At Chase, a person-to-person or external transfer does not. 1 At Wells Fargo, a transfer between accounts does not, while a posted Original Credit Transaction to the debit card can. 2 You do not get to choose the code. The bank's label does.

One Chase product that does name Zelle

Chase Secure Banking's separate offer counts qualifying transactions that include Zelle. 3 That sentence is not on the Total Checking bonus. Do not import it. The Total Checking checklist is in Chase Total Checking bonus requirements. The Wells Fargo list, including the card-network rail, is in Wells Fargo checking bonus requirements.

What to do this week

Send the deposit you believe qualifies, early. If the label is wrong, you still have time to point real payroll at the account. Switch direct deposit without missing a paycheck is the order of operations. Record the label, not your intention, in the bank bonus tracker. If the bonus never arrives, the order of checks is in why the bonus has not posted. The habit of reading the definition before you move money is in how to read a bank bonus offer.

Common questions

If I Venmo myself from another bank, does that count?

Treat it as a transfer you started. Chase excludes external transfers and person-to-person payments. Wells Fargo excludes transfers from one account to another and Zelle. A self-payment through Venmo is not salary from an employer.

Does Venmo's own direct-deposit feature qualify?

Only if the employer pays the bank account named in the offer. Venmo can receive payroll into a Venmo balance. That credit never posts at Chase or Wells Fargo, so it cannot meet their deposit tests.

Could a Venmo cash-out count at Wells Fargo?

Only if it posts as a qualifying electronic deposit under Wells Fargo's definition, which includes certain Visa or Mastercard credits to the debit card. If the activity label reads like Zelle or a transfer, assume it failed. Chase Total Checking does not name that card-network rail at all.
