How to switch direct deposit for a bonus without missing payroll

Change payroll only after you know the effective pay date, and keep the old account funded until a qualifying credit has posted at the new bank. Capital One says it may take two cycles for direct deposits to take effect. Chase and Wells Fargo give you 90 days, but a transfer you start yourself does not replace payroll. Split the paycheck if the employer allows it. Do not close the old account in the same week you submit the form.
The bonus needs a qualifying credit at the new bank. Your life needs the old credit to keep arriving until that happens. Do those in that order.
Ask payroll for a date, not a vibe
Submit the new routing and account numbers, then ask which pay date will be the first one sent there. Capital One says it may take two cycles for direct deposits to take effect. 1 That is Capital One's own warning about setup time. Your employer may be faster or slower. Write the date down. If that date falls outside the bank's window, the bonus plan is already late. What if you miss a bank bonus deadline is the consequence.
What the bank will count when the credit arrives
Chase wants an electronic deposit of paycheck, pension, or government benefits from the employer or the government, totaling $1,000 inside 90 days of enrollment. 2 Wells Fargo wants $1,000 in qualifying electronic deposits that have posted within 90 calendar days of opening, and it excludes transfers you start. 3 A wire or an ACH you push from the old bank to "simulate" payroll fails those definitions. 2 3 What counts as a direct deposit is the full exclusion list. Does Venmo count covers the app people use as a bridge. It is the wrong bridge.
Keep the old account alive
Leave at least one bill cycle of cash in the account that still pays rent and cards. Move bill pay only after the new deposit has posted and the bank shows it as available. Overdraft risk while a bonus is pending is what happens if you skip that. Do not close the old account to "force" the employer. A closed destination bounces the file, and a bounced file is not a qualifying deposit.
Splits, and two bonuses at once
If the employer can split by amount or percent, send only what the offer requires to the new account. Multiple bank bonuses at the same time covers two banks and one paycheck. Each bank still applies its own definition. A split that is too small fails Capital One's rule of two deposits of at least $500 each, even if the combined dollars look large. 1 Track each expected pay date in the bank bonus tracker.
The first credit is a test
When it posts, read the description before you move the rest of your pay. Employer name and a payroll description is the pass. "Transfer" or a person's name is the fail, and you still have time if you started early. Then update the tracker's deposit total from the posted amount, not from the pay stub you hoped would land. Copy the window start from the offer before you submit the payroll form, using how to read a bank bonus offer.
Common questions
Should I switch the entire paycheck?
Only if you must. A split that sends the qualifying amount to the new account and the rest to the old one keeps bills paid. Confirm the employer's split is an ACH credit from payroll, not a transfer you set up at the new bank.
What if my employer takes a full month?
Count that delay inside the bank's window before you apply, or apply only when the remaining days still cover it. Chase's 90 days start at enrollment. Waiting to submit payroll until week ten is how the window expires.
Can I use Venmo while payroll updates?
Not as the qualifying deposit. Person-to-person Venmo is the wrong shape at Chase and Wells Fargo. It also does not pay the rent. Fund the bill-pay account with money you already have.
