Soft pull vs hard pull when you open a bonus account

A hard inquiry is a lender reviewing your credit report because you applied for credit, and the CFPB says it can affect your score. A soft inquiry is not an application for new credit, and it does not affect your score. A checking account is not a loan. Some banks still look at a credit report or a checking-account report. Ask if the application includes a credit product before you assume the pull is soft.
"Soft pull" and "hard pull" are credit-report words. A bank bonus is usually a deposit product. Mixing them produces bad plans: people skip a checking offer they could take, or they add a credit line they did not notice.
The CFPB's two categories
A hard inquiry is often a lender, after you apply for credit, deciding whether to approve a loan or credit. The CFPB says these inquiries can affect your score because scoring models look at how recently and how often you apply for credit. 1 A soft inquiry includes reviews of existing accounts, prescreening, employment screening, and your own requests for your report. Soft inquiries do not affect your credit scores, and other lenders do not see them when they buy your report. 1
A card is the hard-inquiry case
When you apply for a credit card, the issuer reviews your credit. The CFPB calls that a hard inquiry. 2 It can appear on your report and may affect your score. 2 A credit card sign-up bonus rides on that application. Bank bonus vs credit card sign-up offer is the product split. The credit card tracker is where a new card's dates belong. It is not where a checking bonus's ChexSystems question belongs.
A checking account is a different report
The CFPB says banks deny checking accounts because of checking-account reporting companies such as Chex Systems and Early Warning Services. 3 It also says some banks use traditional credit reports in addition to, or instead of, that checking report. 3 So "checking never touches credit" is too strong, and "checking is a hard pull" is too strong. The accurate step is to ask, before you submit, whether this application accesses a credit report and whether you are opting into a credit feature. Does opening bank accounts hurt your credit is the longer version of the checking-report side.
Where a credit product hides
Overdraft protection that is a transfer from a savings account is not the same product as overdraft protection that is a line of credit. A line of credit is credit. If the application bundles one, treat that bundle as something that can be a hard inquiry until the bank says otherwise. 1 The bonus can exist without the line. Decline the line if you only wanted the deposit offer.
How many applications is the real issue
How many bank bonuses in a year is limited by each bank's reuse rule and by the deposits you can complete. It is not limited by a published "maximum hard pulls" number, because the checking offers we read do not state one. If you are also applying for cards, count those card applications as the hard inquiries. Keep the checking rows in the bank bonus tracker on their own list.
Common questions
Will Chase's checking bonus hard-pull my credit?
The Total Checking offer page we read does not say it is a credit application. It also does not promise a soft pull. Ask Chase, on that application, whether a credit report will be accessed and whether any credit product is included. Do not infer the answer from a blog.
Does a soft pull show up for other lenders?
The CFPB says soft inquiries are shown to you when you review your own report, and they are not visible when others purchase your report. They do not affect your credit scores.
I want the checking bonus and a new card. Which pull is which?
The card application is a hard inquiry when the issuer reviews your credit to decide on the card. The checking application is a separate question. Space them only if you care about recent hard inquiries. The bank bonus does not require the card.
