What a returned or reversed deposit does to a bank bonus

A deposit that later reverses should not be treated as still qualifying. Chase needs $1,000 in direct deposits inside 90 days of enrollment. Wells Fargo needs $1,000 posted inside 90 calendar days of opening. Capital One needs two qualifying deposits of at least $500. Replace a shortfall with another qualifying deposit before the window ends. A transfer you start is not that replacement.

A qualifying total is what is still in the activity as a qualifying credit. It is not the high-water mark from the day payroll first appeared.

The tests are totals of deposits that count

Chase: $1,000 or more in direct deposits within 90 days of enrollment. 1 Wells Fargo: $1,000 or more in qualifying electronic deposits that have posted, within 90 calendar days of opening. 2 Capital One: at least two qualifying direct deposits, each $500 or more, within 75 days of opening. 3 If one of those credits is reversed, redo the sum with the credits that remain. A $1,000 paycheck that is pulled back leaves $0 toward Chase or Wells Fargo. Two Capital One deposits become one if one of them returns, and one is not enough. 3

Why reversals happen

Employers reverse ACH credits for wrong account numbers, duplicate files, and payroll corrections. You will see a debit that references the original credit. That debit is the event that changes the bonus math. Pending or posted is the earlier problem, when the credit never finished posting. A reversal is the later problem, when it posted and then left.

What you may use to replace it

Another paycheck, pension payment, or government benefit that matches the definition, inside the window. 1 2 Not a transfer from your other bank, not Zelle, and not a wire into Capital One. 1 2 3 What counts as a direct deposit is the allowed list. Does Venmo count is the app people try after a payroll failure. It does not repair the total.

Time left is the whole strategy

Look at the window end date the day you see the reversal. If another pay date falls inside it, ask payroll to send that one to the bonus account. If no pay date remains, the offer is missed unless the bank extends it in writing. What if you miss a bank bonus deadline says these pages do not print a partial bonus. Update the bank bonus tracker down, not only up.

What to keep

Keep the original credit, the reversal debit, and the replacement credit if one arrives. If you later dispute a missing bonus, those three lines are the story. Why the bonus has not posted assumes the requirement was met. A reversed deposit means you have to prove it was met after the reversal, not before. The offer you are proving against should be the PDF from how to read a bank bonus offer.

Common questions

The deposit showed for a week and then disappeared. Do I still qualify?

Recalculate from what is still posted. If the remaining qualifying credits are under the offer's total, or you no longer have Capital One's two deposits, you are short. The week it was visible does not freeze the total.

Can I wire the same amount back in?

Not as a fix at the banks we read. Chase wants payroll, pension, or government benefits. Wells Fargo excludes transfers between accounts. Capital One says wire transfers are not a qualifying direct deposit. Ask payroll to resend a real direct deposit.

Who do I call first?

Payroll, if the reversal was their correction, because only they can send another qualifying credit. Call the bank if the account number was wrong on a credit that never posted. Save both replies.
