Does Walmart count as grocery for credit card rewards?

Grocery bonus rates usually apply only when the merchant codes as a supermarket or grocery store at the card network. Big-box stores and wholesale clubs often code as superstore or warehouse, so the grocery bonus does not apply even if you buy food. Confirm the current issuer terms for any named exception; coding can also vary by outlet.
The basket does not decide the rate. The merchant category does.
A grocery bonus is paid when the issuer treats the shop as a supermarket or grocery store. American Express defines a U.S. supermarket as a merchant that offers a wide variety of food and household products, and then says superstores, convenience stores, warehouse clubs and meal-kit delivery services are not considered supermarkets. 1 Its examples of merchants that will not earn additional supermarket rewards include Target and Walmart as superstores, and BJ's Club as a warehouse club. 1
Chase explains the mechanism in network terms. Merchants who accept Visa or Mastercard are assigned a merchant code based on the products and services they primarily sell, and Chase groups similar codes into rewards categories. 2 A merchant can sell groceries and still sit outside the grocery group if its assigned code is not in that group. 2 Chase's grocery-store category excludes warehouse clubs, discount stores and some smaller merchants such as drugstores. 2 Its online grocery category excludes Target, Walmart and wholesale clubs such as Costco and BJ's. 2
Walmart and Target
Capital One's SavorOne page asks what counts as a grocery store and answers: a supermarket, meat locker, freezer, dairy product store and specialty market, excluding superstores like Walmart and Target. 3 That is a dated issuer sentence, not a permanent law of card rewards. Read the current terms before treating either chain as an exception.
A Walmart that sells a full grocery line can still be excluded. The bonus follows the code the terminal sends and the issuer's category list, not the signage. A pharmacy counter or fuel pump inside the same building is often a different merchant again. American Express says superstores, supermarkets and warehouse clubs that sell gasoline are not considered gas stations, and names Target and Walmart as merchants where additional gas rewards will not earn. 1 Chase excludes gas-station purchases from merchants who also operate grocery stores from its grocery-store category. 2
Do not treat any national chain as a complete map of every till. Outlet-level coding can differ, and the issuer pages above do not publish a store-by-store list.
Costco, Sam's Club and other warehouses
Warehouse clubs are a different category from supermarkets on the issuer pages above. American Express names BJ's Club as a warehouse example that does not earn additional supermarket rewards. 1 Chase names Costco and BJ's as wholesale clubs outside grocery and online grocery. 2 Sam's Club is the same kind of merchant: a membership warehouse, not a supermarket as those pages define one.
Acceptance comes first at Costco. Costco's customer service page, published 2026-03-02, lists all Visa cards among the methods accepted at U.S. warehouse locations and at U.S. Costco gas stations. 4 The same page lists Mastercard on Costco.com, alongside Visa. 4 A Mastercard, American Express or Discover credit card is not on the warehouse list, so the grocery-bonus question does not arise at the till if the card cannot be charged.
The Costco Anywhere Visa Card by Citi is built for that till. Citi publishes 2% cash back on all other purchases from Costco and Costco.com, separate from its gas and restaurant rates, rather than calling Costco a supermarket. 5 That is a warehouse-club rate on a Visa that the warehouse accepts, not a grocery bonus that crossed categories.
Caps, balances and the card you already hold
Even when a purchase does code as grocery, the winning card is the one with room under its bonus cap, used only if you clear the statement. The published supermarket rates, and the spending level at which each one stops winning, are worked through in the grocery comparison. A card that has already spent its grocery cap earns its base rate on the next supermarket dollar.
If you are carrying a balance, stop ranking rewards. Interest is charged on what you owe, every day, at a rate well above any cash-back percentage.
Where CardLab helps
Merchant coding quirks belong in a FAQ like this one. They do not belong in invented earn rates.
CardLab's Best Card ranks the cards you track for a grocery purchase using rates read from issuer pages, each stored with the sentence and the date it was read. It is cap-aware, so a card drops when its bonus is spent and the ranking says that is why. It does not invent a merchant category code for Walmart, Target or Costco, and it takes no commission from any issuer.
Open Best Card for the cards you actually hold, or use the calculators when the question is interest, a minimum payment or a bonus against parked cash. There is no bank login.
Common questions
Does Walmart count as grocery for credit card rewards?
Usually not on cards that pay a supermarket or grocery-store bonus. American Express lists Walmart as a superstore that is not a supermarket. Capital One's SavorOne page excludes superstores like Walmart from grocery stores. The grocery rate is about the merchant code, not whether the cart is food.
Does Target count as grocery?
Usually not, for the same reason. American Express names Target as a superstore excluded from U.S. supermarkets. Capital One excludes Target from grocery stores on the SavorOne page. Chase also excludes Target from its online grocery category. Read the current issuer sentence before treating any store as a permanent exception.
Which cards work at a US Costco warehouse?
Costco's customer service page, published 2026-03-02, lists all Visa cards among the payment methods accepted at U.S. warehouse locations. Costco.com additionally lists Mastercard. Acceptance is a separate question from earn rate: warehouse clubs are usually outside grocery, and the Costco Anywhere Visa by Citi publishes its own Costco rate rather than a supermarket rate.
What is a merchant category code?
Card networks assign each merchant a category based on what that merchant primarily sells. Issuers then group those codes into rewards categories. Chase states that a shop can look like it fits a category and still fail if its assigned code is not in that group. Capital One says it uses the code the merchant assigns, and that it is not responsible for those codes. This page does not publish a complete code list, because the live assignment is the merchant's and the issuer's grouping.
What if my grocery card has already hit its cap?
Use the next-best rate among cards that still pay an elevated grocery reward, or the best uncapped base rate you hold. A spent cap pays the card's base rate on further supermarket spend. That ranking question is what Best Card is for, once the purchase actually codes as grocery.
What if I am carrying a balance?
Optimise the borrowing cost first. Interest on a carried balance is charged daily and usually outruns a few percent of rewards in a single month. The cheapest card to borrow on is the right card until the statement is cleared, whatever the merchant codes as.
