Which credit card perks are worth an annual fee?

1 min read · Card offers, Strategy

A perk is worth the annual fee when the credits and access you actually use exceed the fee in a normal year. Count only the hotel, travel, or dining credits you redeem, and lounge visits you take. Ignore the brochure list you will not touch. If the leftovers are thin, a no-fee card is the quieter win.

Annual fees buy a stack of perks on paper. 1

You only bought the ones you redeem.

Build a use ledger

List each credit and access item with a realistic count for the next twelve months. Hotel credit: how many nights you already book. Dining credit: how many times you will remember to use the portal. Lounge: how many departures clear security with time to spare.

Multiply by the dollar value you actually receive, not the peak marketing number. 2

Clear the fee with used value

Example: $550 fee, $300 travel credit you fully use, $120 dining credit you use, four lounge visits you value at $40 each: 300 + 120 + 160 = $580 of used value. Net versus the fee is $30 before you count earn rates. If two lounge visits disappear from the plan, the card flips negative on perks alone.

Credits you forget are not income

A monthly rideshare credit you never trigger is worth $0. Set calendar reminders or pick a cheaper card. CardLab can track the card; it cannot tap the credit for you.

Year one versus renewal

Year one can lean on a welcome bonus. Renewal should stand on perks plus ongoing earn. If renewal needs a story, downgrade or decline before the fee posts when the issuer allows it.

Soft perks still need a number

Purchase protection and trip delay coverage matter when you use them. They are insurance-shaped, so price them as risk reduction, not as cash you pocket every year.

Common questions

Do unused credits roll over?

Often no. Many monthly or annual credits expire if you do not trigger them. Read the card's current benefits guide for the credit you care about.

Are lounge passes always worth it?

Only if you fly enough times through airports where that lounge network has access. A pass you never scan is a fee with a logo.

How do perks interact with a welcome bonus?

In year one, add the bonus net and the perk net, then subtract the fee once. In year two, drop the bonus and keep only the perk net versus the fee.
